Newell post before project start. Cracks indicate
that wood underneath the
finial is rotted.
Removal of finial reveals extent of dry rot in the finial supports,
which were add-ons to the home's original 100-year-old construction. Many of the
homes we work on include add-on architectural elements fashioned from hemlock,
poplar or fir--wood that rots relatively quickly in San Francisco's shifting weather patterns.
Once this 'newer' construction is removed, we find pristine 100-year-old redwood construction.
We chose a new shape for the final and support to flow
better with size and design of the home. We paint finial
with accent color and prime supporting pieces
before installation.
The finished finial and newell post.
